Overview of Oral Proficiency Interview

Language Testing International, the official testing office of the American Council on the Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has recently updated its application process for all testing candidates.  Students must now apply to take the test directly at www.languagetesting.com. Once there, please click on the link in the upper right hand corner where it asks “Are you a client, test candidate or proctor?”  This will take you to a new screen.

Go to the following link: http://www.languagetesting.com/login-and-registration. Click on taking the test for a school or license and then click on "buy a test". Next click "Get Started". When asked if you are taking the test for state certification, click no (it is a UNC Charlotte requirement). You will then be asked to enter your university name: University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Select your language (French, Spanish, or German), and then select continue. You will be brought to the test selection screen. The OPIc has already been selected for you. All you need to do is click on the small radio button on the top left-hand corner of the orange bar, and then click continue. At this point, you are ready to start taking the test.

Be advised that you are instructed to take the Oral Proficiency Interview by Computer (OPIc). You will be presented with the option of taking a $70 test. The test allows you to demonstrate the full range of your language skills up to as high as the Superior level on the ACTFL Proficiency Scale.  Once your test has been rated, you will have access to an Official ACTFL Certificate of Proficiency, which can be a valuable credential.

If you have any questions or need assistance while you are filling out the application, please contact test processing at: 1-800-486-8444.

Please note that all OPIs must be proctored. As a courtesy to COED students, every Wednesday from 4-6PM the Coordinator of the Language Resource Center (LRC), Ryan McCallum, is available to serve as a proctor. Students who wish to have Ryan proctor their OPI should contact him in advance at RyanMcCallum@uncc.edu. The LRC is located on the 4th floor of the College of Education. The OPI takes approximately 30 minutes to complete.
